infrastructure code for virtual democracies

  1. cloud voting is important

Secure, authenticated cloud voting is the most important feature to ship for electronic democracy. The FedRAMP standards are strict, so strict that some say cloud voting will never be possible. There are certainly articles from the establishment that discourage this type of development. However, when a cloud passes to the audit and is recognized as FedRAMP compliant, one of three things can happen. …

  2. learning and teaching

devopracy is a project for both learning and teaching DevOps. It can be difficult to experiment as an infrastructure engineer; commercial infrastructures are often vast and brittle, and management is unconcerned with experimentation. Consider the opportunity we have with the event cloud: it is a toy infrastructure, inherently portable, disposable, redundant, and modular. It is a perfect use case to try out a one-off deployment technique, or a piece of code out of scope of your regular infrastructure. We have a playground for high security cloud infrastructure, and you can use the code you contribute on internal projects as you like. …

  3. only open source

We will build our cloud entirely with open source code. We will build our cloud publicly and securely. When security is expensive, poor people have no credentials. Security specialists are invited to contribute especially in issues in order to inform our security profile. …

  4. security is sovereignty

There are two use cases for virtual democracy. The first is the ongoing migration of de facto nations to the internet to provide better services for citizens. The second is de jure nations desirous of democratic governance. The second case might embrace assembly of persons to establish basic human rights: this includes various diasporas, communities of conscience or of interest, and pro-democracy activists in countries where democracy is illegal. …

  5. devopracy event cloud

All of the repositories of this organization are pieces of a single project. We aspire to build a disposable, portable cloud with open-source code that can pass an audit for security using the FedRAMP standard. We do not work for any government. The event cloud can be used by organizations who have similar security aspirations without similar budget to the US Federal Government. Indeed the very standard Uncle Sam endorses internally is a very nice model for any government, especially one that exists solely on the cloud. …

  6. a virtual democracy is not a single app

It’s not some super-encrypted voting api, not a politically charged social network, or an endless maze of malfunctioning pdf forms with big brother behind it. Digital government may begin with digital assembly, civic engagement, online deliberation, or a manifesto. But eventually government implies much more: a politically relevant government may need treaties, taxation, record keeping, defense; the argument can be made services are the reason for government. They provide action for legislation. …
